VDNG will host a vibrant Masnytsia celebration on March 1-2. Expect folk performances, traditional circle dances, engaging workshops, colorful photo spots, tasty treats, and festive activities for all ages!
Masnytsia marks a period of merriment, featuring tasty pancakes and the farewell to winter. In Ukraine, this celebration is also known as Kolodiy, Cheese Week, or Babsky Svyato. It's a period for joy, connecting with family and friends, honoring ancestors, and hosting grand festivities.
Varenyky, butter, and cheese are essential elements of traditional Masnytsia celebrations. Food courts will offer special menus featuring dishes that blend ancient recipes with modern cooking techniques. Visitors will have the opportunity to try varenyky with a variety of fillings, pancakes, herbal teas, as well as traditional liqueurs and other beverages.
Visitors can capture memories of the day by exploring themed photo zones that feature hay, floral arrangements, and displays with Ukrainian ribbons. Most importantly, you will see a giant motanka – a symbol of family warmth and spring renewal. Festive labyrinths are offered for children.
On stage, ensembles such as "Hromytsia", "Zernyatko", "Kralytsia", "GG HulyaiHorod", and others will perform spring songs, haivky (traditional spring ritual songs), and Ukrainian folk songs. You can also participate in masterclasses for folk dances and round dances.
Theatrical entertainment includes street performances, stilt walkers, and stage plays. Participants can also join workshops to learn old crafts like pottery, straw weaving, and headscarf tying.
The event's highlight will be the traditional burning of Kostrub and a fire show by the Kyiv fire theater "Yasne sontse".
