A new urban space is being created on Kontraktova Square

A redesign of Kontraktova Square has begun in Kyiv’s Podil district, as part of the “TORV Kyiv” project. The initiative is being implemented by renowned urbanist Mikael Colville-Andersen and the public organization “DIY Ukraine”, with the support of the company “Novo Nordisk”. The project also involves the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine and the Danish Cultural Institute. This was reported on the official website of “DIY Ukraine”.

Kontraktova Square has always been a vibrant tourist destination in the capital, and the new transformation aims to make it even more dynamic, comfortable, and attractive, encouraging long-term interaction among residents and visitors of the city.

Some first results are already visible: a green area with trees in special planters, benches for rest, and a graphic artwork on the pavement titled “Flower of Life”, which has already become a bright signature of the new space.

Plans also include the creation of recreational zones for physical and mental rest, children's play and sports areas, cultural corners, chess tables, phone charging stations, and more.

The project envisions increasing the number of users of the space, actively engaging children, promoting physical activity, and boosting the profitability of local businesses. Priorities also include encouraging walking, cycling, and the use of public transportation, promoting Scandinavian sustainable design and architecture, and creating a model for replication in other Ukrainian cities.

The space is designed to function during blackouts using solar and wind energy, alongside sustainable development solutions.

The official opening is scheduled for July.
